I couldn’t tell whether these two women were mother and daughter or simply friends, but they seemed connected by their shared love of blue. I imagined them texting each other, the way families sometimes do now instead of walking across a room to greet someone in person.

Here is the original photograph of the two women in blue. In the source image, a third woman stood near the subway doorway, but I chose to leave her out. Focusing on the pair allowed their presence to expand, giving greater emphasis to their portraits and the connection between them.
