At the far end of the subway car, a woman recited verses from the Bible in a loud, urgent voice. The sound startled a young boy, and his mother gently placed her hand over him in a small, protective gesture.

Here is the original photograph of the four women. I show the photo so viewers can see how closely the painting follows the source image, as well as the additional elements I’ve introduced. I often incorporate a reference to nature — in this case, the hanging leaves — as part of my ongoing desire to bring a sense of beauty and the natural world into the subway environment.
